The Old City, Baku

Icherisheher, the Old City of Baku, is the original walled city. The walled city is famous for its Maiden Tower (Gis Galasy) built in the 12th Century. Built over structures dating from the 7th and 6th century BC and inhabited from the stone age. The Shirvanshah’s Palace is a beautiful series of structures and a jewel of Azerbaijani architecture. The narrow cobblestone streets are filled with interesting museums, shops with Azeri handicrafts, and cafes. While touristy, the buskers hawking their wares politely ask you to enter their shops, and easily take a returned polite no with no offense. But if you enter you will be treated to rich colors and textures. Authentic luxurious hand-made rugs, made only by young women with tiny fingers and keen eyesight, to achieve the best and smallest knots for the weave. Local wools, cotton, and expensive silks are skillfully woven into true treasures, rugs that appreciate with age. Pottery, brass work, and delicately embellished tea sets are also prolific.
