Ometepe

Ometepe is a beautiful island in the middle of an enormous lake in Nicaragua. It was formed by two volcanos. We took a ferry ride over to the island. Watching them load cars and trucks onto the ferry was crazy. They had only inches to spare. They actually would jack up the cars to scoot them closer together. Note to tall people. Duck your head when you walk through the door on a ship. I was shooting a video following a Nigaruguan gentleman and walked right into the steel bulkhead. He did not need to duck. I did.

We stayed at Totoco Eco Lodge. It was an amazing place. Howler monkeys wake you at 4:00 in the morning and enjoy an outdoor shower with butterflies during the steamy day. And it was hot! Up higher on the island, it was cooler, but down near town, it was quite warm!

There are mosquito nets on the beds, and it is recommended you use them. The bug life is quite diverse. We saw many interesting insects, and most don’t bother me. There was a small tarantula (harmless) that walked across our bathroom while I was occupied. And I got to experience a Bullet Ant first hand. I reached down to pick up something off of a chair and felt like my hand was hit by a hammer. A quarter-inch long ant with impressive mandibles let me know how it got its name.
