Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a beautiful old town. Very manageable to walk virtually anywhere you need to go. Impressive old colonial buildings abound. The old charm has been maintained with modern stores required to maintain the original facade, and a very minimal amount of signage allowed. There are also several major ruins, a result of prior earthquakes and volcanic activity. One prominent volcano is just outside of town. I asked a local ” How long has it been since it erupted?” He replied “Today”. Sure enough that evening you could see the fiery glow at the top of the cone, and the cloud that surrounded it was largely made of the gases escaping the eruption. Unfortunately a few months after we left, a major eruption occurred with significant loss of life and destruction of homes in the area. I believe the town itself was spared. Visit the town if you have a chance, it is well worth at least a few days’ visits. There is plenty to do and see, and there are several good Spanish Schools in town. All very reasonably priced. We studied at Ixchel Spanish School. They were great. And I assure everyone my poor Spanish skills should not be a reflection on them! More my ADHD, age, and trauma!
