Granada, Nicaragua, Tropical, Colonial, historic, beautiful

Granada

Granada is a captivating city. Old world charm, situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Nicaragua. Its rich colonial heritage is shown in its architecture. Originally a thriving indigenous population, after its conquest in 1524 by the Spanish, it was renamed after the ancient Spanish city of the same name.

We stayed at an Airbnb, in a wonderful renovated colonial building. With a pool and two courtyards, high airy ceilings, and large rooms. With a fabulous view of Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral. The hosts were very welcoming and knowledgeable.

The Cathedral was beautiful, very bright and light. Of course, when we were visiting, the intense mid-day sun was streaming in, illuminating the beautiful frescos and ornately carved wood. It is a good thing it was bright out, as the “bulb” was burned out. It appeared like the only main lighting was provided by a large fluorescent bulb in the center of the cathedral. Two men were erecting a scaffolding, one piece at a time, climbing down to the bottom, grabbing a piece and carrying to the highest level, assembling it, climbing down to get the next piece. All to change one bulb high up in the ceiling.

Parque Central was a busy hub of activity. Bright horse-drawn carriages being one of the main attractions. There were plenty of restaurants and shops as well. The ever-present street merchants were always trying to tempt, or politely pressure, you into handmade crafts. The hammocks and other brightly woven items were very well crafted and affordable. We have a goal to always travel light, so we are a tough sell.
